Melasma in Pregnancy: Why Every Device Waits — and What Can Be Done Now
Pregnancy melasma (the \”mask\”) is common, distressing and completely off-limits for device treatment — not because the laser knows the client is pregnant, but because protocols have no pregnancy safety data, and the melasma itself behaves differently until hormones settle.
Why Deferral Is the Only Correct Answer
- No energy-device modality has pregnancy safety data — every protocol assumes a non-pregnant client
- Pregnancy melasma often lightens substantially postpartum — treating through pregnancy risks PIH on skin that would have self-corrected
- Abdominal and facial work is deferred across the board in pregnancy (the universal red flag)
What Is Appropriate Now
- Photoprotection coaching — the single highest-value intervention: broad-spectrum SPF 50+, physical shading, hat discipline. Visible-d light protection slows the mask\’s progression
- Gentle barrier care — pregnancy-safe moisturizing per the client\’s physician; no active brightening agents without medical sign-off
- The postpartum plan in writing: reassessment 3+ months post-delivery (or post-breastfeeding, per physician), then the conservative ladder from the combination protocol if melasma persists
The Consultation Frame
\”Everything we could offer now is either unsafe to promise or would likely reverse on its own — here is what protects your skin today, and here is your plan for month four.\” Clinics that write the plan down earn the postpartum course; clinics that improvise lose the client to whoever googled fastest.
