Hair Removal Prep and Aftercare: The Rules That Protect Results
Hair removal outcomes split into two halves: what happens in the room and what happens around it. The around-it half — prep and aftercare — causes most \”the treatment didn\’t work\” complaints when neglected.
Before the Session (48-Hour Rules)
- Shave 12-24 hours before — the laser needs the follicle, not a hair above the skin
- No waxing, plucking or epilating for 4 weeks prior — the follicle must be intact to be targetable
- No active tanning; sun-exposed skin forces fluence down or defers treatment
- Clean skin, no creams or deodorant on the treatment zone
After the Session
- 48 hours: no hot showers, saunas, intense workouts — heat and friction irritate treated follicles
- Shedding week (days 5-14): hairs push out looking like regrowth — do not pluck; let them fall
- SPF on exposed treated zones; no active tanning between sessions ever
- Skip actives (acids, retinoids) on the area for 3 days
The One-Page Rule
Send prep rules at booking and aftercare rules within an hour of the session — written rules get followed, verbal rules get remembered wrong. Cooling-equipped platforms like the 1200W diode minimize the aftercare burden; the first-session run of show covers the in-room half.
