Hair Removal and Tattoos: Why the Laser Must Go Around the Ink
Clients with tattoos assume hair removal simply works around their art. It does — with explicit rules, because laser energy that hits tattoo ink does something neither client nor artist wants.
Why Tattoos Are Excluded Zones
- Tattoo ink absorbs laser energy far more aggressively than hair follicle melanin
- Hair-removal settings over ink risk ink blasting, fading, burns and pigment displacement — damage to art that is often worth more than the course
- Insurers and device manuals treat \”laser over tattoo\” as an excluded technique at hair-removal settings
The Working Rules
- Map every tattoo at consultation — including faded and covered-up ones the client forgets to mention
- Treat around ink with a margin of roughly the spot-size diameter; document the map in the client file with photos
- Hair inside a tattoo: options are electrolysis (per-follicle, tattoo-safe — see the comparison guide) or careful shaving grooming; do not laser
- Client wants tattoo removal later anyway: sequence removal first, hair removal after the skin has fully settled
The Consultation Sentence
\”We treat everything except the tattooed area — the laser cannot tell your hair color from your ink, and it would attack the art.\” Said plainly, it reads as expertise. Settings and wavelength logic per the wavelength guide; test-spot discipline per the first-session flow.
