Laser Operator Safety: The Pre-Session Checklist That Prevents Accidents
Laser accidents are process failures, not equipment failures. A laminated pre-session checklist — run before every client, every room, every day — eliminates nearly all of the classic injury scenarios.
Room and Equipment (before first client)
- Warning signage on the door, windows covered, reflective surfaces removed or draped
- Handpiece inspection: fiber integrity, lens clean, aiming beam aligned
- Emergency stop reachable; footswitch guarded against accidental press
People (before every session)
- Occlusive or wavelength-matched goggles on client AND operator — corneal burns are the most common laser injury and entirely preventable
- Client skin inspected: moles, tattoos, jewelry mapped and excluded
- Photosensitivity medication screen — the answer changes the session or cancels it
- No flammable prep: alcohol-based solutions fully dry before any energy pass
During and After
Holster the handpiece between passes — never set it on the bed. Plume extraction on ablative work. Post-session: handpiece returned to cradle, key/lock secured, room re-verified before the next client enters. Devices across this site — diodes, CO2 platforms, picosecond systems — ship with operator safety documentation; the checklist above is the discipline layer that makes it real.
