CO2 Fractional Settings: Balancing Density Against Energy
CO2 fractional outcomes are governed by two independent dials: energy (depth of each micro-column) and density (percentage of surface treated). Most complications trace back to raising both at once — most disappointing results trace back to raising neither.
What Each Dial Does
- Energy (mJ): determines ablation depth — higher energy reaches deeper scars but lengthens downtime and erythema
- Density (%): determines how much skin is hit — higher density means more improvement per session but more crusting and longer healing
The Balancing Rules
- Scars: favor energy over density — deep columns remodel deep scars; 10-20% density is enough
- Texture/photoaging: favor density over energy — broad shallow resurfacing evens tone
- Off-face areas (neck, chest): lower BOTH — thin adnexal-poor skin heals slowly
- Never escalate both parameters in the same session for a new client
Downtime Math
Low energy + low density: 3-4 days of crusting. High energy + high density: 7-10 days plus weeks of redness. Quote downtime from the settings you actually plan to use, not from a brochure. The CO2 fractional platforms with independent energy/density scanning graphics make this calibration straightforward — see also the complete post-laser skincare timeline.
